Run As One:
Chapter One

The concrete buildings radiate a vibrant orange. The gaudy skyscrapers leave a cool blue shadow behind them. The streets are bare, lacking footsteps of soulless businessmen. Street lights flicker to life as they bare down onto the grimy pavement. A light mist hovers over the cityscape. The mist never seems to clear and the city constantly feels corrupted in one way or another.
A flood of delectable aroma emits out of the dark alley just off to the side of the marketplace. The local butcher discarded a plethora of cutlets and various meats into a dumpster. The bounty is completely irresistible to those with a keen sense of smell and a desire for meat.

First to explore the delectable array was Molly. She peeked her head around from the alley just perpendicular to it. She ran to the dumpster and grabbed the ledge. Since she wasn't very tall, Molly had to lift herself up to reach the meat. The only thing that one was able to see was Molly's bum and legs flailing a little as they hung just outside of the dumpster. "Nice." Molly smirked at her discovery. Not only did it smell incredible, but the bast part was that it was free

Mercie had been trying to wait for nightfall before deciding to head out on the prowl. She'd only come to this city the previous morning and had decided to keep her head down. As the sun began to set the wind had changed and brought the unmistakable scent of cut beef to her senses. The shops should be closing soon and she couldn't help but emerge from her hiding place to follow the delectable scent. The last few rays of sunlight glistened on the edges of the street as she finally found the source of the scent. At the end of the alley she saw a dumpster and the bottom end of a girl hanging off the edge. Mercie wasn't the kind of person or wolf to approach strangers but three days of traveling without food spurred her to try and make nice. She approached cautiously "Do you need help?" She asked dimunitivly.

One girl was something, two meant... Garth wasn't sure what it meant, but it meant SOMETHING alright. It meant he wouldn't be getting any of the meat if he didn't act fast. Then again... he could always hunt later, why bother these people when there was food scurrying in every dock and basement of the city. As he thought of this and decided to go hunt he still hovered around the entrance of the alley, hidden behind a dumpster of a grocery store; nothing good there, not compared to the mouth dripping meat in the currently raided trash a few feet away.

Molly yelped a little from surprise of someone outside of the dumpster so soon after she had plummeted her torso in. Leaning back up, she glanced down at the younger woman. There was no way she was going to be able to pull the carcass up on her own, nor did she wish to dine in an open garbage. Accepting the inevitable, she replied, "Sure. But I found it!" In truth, she hadn't seen a wolf so eager to help in a long time.

"I'll help if your willing to share." Mercie said cautiously. She'd not interacted with many wolves in her sixteen years so she wasn't sure how to go about it. But she didn't think she sounded dumb by declaring her intentions to help for a reward.

"If you can get this thing out of here with me... fine." Molly rolled her eyes. In truth, she knew that this was too much for herself even if she ate until she was full. This young wolf couldn't eat that much. She grabbed onto the meat with her hands, digging her nails deeply into it and started to lift. "Well come on!"

There was a small clatter from down the alley as Garth's slight stirrings knocked over a few empty bottles, obviously this place was frequented by heavy drinkers. He winced slightly and crouch down behind the trash as best he could, trying to blend in with the other filth.

Without any restraint at the thought of getting icky Mercie dove her hands into the dumpster and hoisted firmly from a grip on the rib cage. The combined efforts of both she and Molly where enough to free the thing from the dumpster and deposit it on a not so dirty looking cardboard box, which promptly flattened as the weight landed on it. Having already been allowed her claim of the food Mercie quickly found that her sharp teeth and muzzle where best suited for this job. She dove in, grinding flesh from bone as she left the more fleshy end for the finder of the spoils.

Down the ally, the opposite way of Garth, came a deep rumbling growl. In the shadows, a canine figure could just been seen, light glinting off of his eyes. As it approached, however, the growling stopped and instead it cocked its head as though confused. The figure stopped, looking at them all, then emerged into the light, wearing a ripped tank top and tight black jeans. A switch blade dangled limply at his side and he pointed with his other hand, saying, "You're wolves..." Augustine didn't care about the stupidity of this statement. He had been alone for so long and wolves were so rare. Through the smog, he thought he was going to jump a few dogs.

Molly jumped out of the dumpster onto her sneakers. Before dining into the carcass, she heard bottle clanging behind her. She spun around and noticed the wolf poking through the trash. "What the-" Before she could finish her sentence, Augustine spoke. Spinning around to face the other direction, she said, "What is with this?" Seeing all these wolves randomly emerge alone was a little suspicious. Molly's eyes locked on the knife in Augustine's hand. Where these three together? Was the girl helping her in the dumpster just part of a plan? Taking it as a threat, she growled underneath her breath. "Back off- this is my find."

Augustine chuckled and closed his knife before twirling it into his back pocket. "Ladies..." he said, his hands out in front of him in an attempt to quell their alarm. "I'm not going to steal from you, I'm not that kinda guy." Funny thing was, the way he swaggered and smirked, he seemed in every respect like he was.

Molly took herself down onto all fours, keeping her tail low. She didn't feel a threat from the girl, nor the random wolf alone in the trash cans behind her. The only character that needed investigating was this darkened figure. Molly took a few steps forward, approaching Augustine. She leaned in and sniffed a little. "Fine." she ended.

Lakota trotted along the street until she heard the rattling of chains. Stopping abruptly she turned around and saw as a teenage boy turned the corner with a doberman at his side. The hair on her back raised high as she saw the dog. He wasn't a threat, she just didn't trust them much. Shaking her head she turned back around and hurried off down the street. After turning down the a street with a meat store she licked her nose and sniffed the air. Meat... Turning her head down an alley way her ears perked up suddenly. "Holy shit..." She hadn't seen this many wolves in one place since her tribe. She wasn't quite sure she felt safe here.

Following the alluring scents of meat despite having just eaten, Arron had his camera out, taking pictures of the city. He turned the corner to the alley and nearly tripped over another wolf. Upon closer inspection, Arron yelped slightly, seeing the wolves gathered. He quickly shoved his camera in the pouch at his waist and backed to the wall of the alley, watching everyone. Fear was alien to him, and he simply stood to the side.

"That's right," Augustine said to Molly, smiling, but immediately his head perked up. More wolves. It was like a freaking party. "Wowa..." he said under his breath and his hand sort of drifted back towards his knife, just in case. "I come in peace," he said somewhat jokingly, believing this was a pack. Hell, if a rogue wolf met up with his old crew, they would've chased the poor guy out of the city.

Molly was starting to realize that this was looking to be the biggest wolf meeting ever. Well, at least as far as she knew. Now that there were 6 wolves in the same alley, hungry for the same meal, Molly figured she should say something, "Listen up!" These wolves had to be loners. None of them seemed to know the other. Not only this, but they were clumsily stumbling into the alley without synchronization like a pack would have. In a way, Molly felt that the huge cow carcass was hers since she found it first. Though she knew food was scarce in the alleys and this was an enormous banquet for just her. Not to mention she didn't feel like taking on 5 wolves at once. "There is enough for everyone. Just no funny stuff." she warned, stepping away from smelling Augustine.

Glancing up, Lakota saw that Augustine looked oddly familiar. Not that that mattered. She has been living in this town so long it's a wonder she hasn't stumbled across these wolves already. Lakota walked to the other end of the alley, next to Augustine and shifted into her human form, glancing around at the bunch, she sighed and shook her head. Today she had decided on wearing her traditional native American get up. "Names Lakota," she said to no one in particular. If someone wanted to step forward and introduce themselves, they could. Otherwise she didn't care.

"Augustine..." Augy said, his hand once again falling away from his knife. "You guys... you aren't a pack?" He glanced over at Molly and Mercie, making sure they weren't gobbling up the good parts while he chatted.

"No, she just helped me get this thing out of the dumpster. I don't belong to a pack." Molly confessed. "My name is Molly. Nice to meet you guys." She was confortable with Augustine's knife now. He didn't seem like a threat any longer. "Excuse me-" She bowed her head and opened her jaws before working at the cow's stomach. Her teeth sunk deep into the flesh and ripped it off the bone with a quick, jerking motion.

"Augustine...have you lived here long?" Lakota was having a difficult time putting her finger on it. Maybe he was a friend of the human boy who used to beat me... He didn't appear to be old enough. She was good with remembering faces so maybe she just passed him by one time on the street. It was a big possibility.

Augustine sort of twisted his face to the side and raised his eyebrow. "Nah, I don't really live anywhere. Do you mind if I eat while we chat?" Getting a little impatient, he appeared as his black furry self and picked himself a good position between the girls to start munching.

Without invitation, Arron took his camera out and started taking pictures of the area around him, careful to not capture the wolves gathered there. He glanced at the three on the carcass. "Name's Arron. And I'm not going to threaten your meal. I'm just out for a photoshoot of the city." His gaze landed on Augustine for a moment before flying away and going to Molly. He looked at every other wolf, then continued to snap pictures.

Oh goody, more wolves... Garth stared at the cow carcass on the ground, there was no chance that there'd be any left if he left it at this right now. He stepped out from behind the trash cans very slowly, licking his lips slightly as he began to creep silently towards the small gathering around the meat. His stomach was the only sound coming from him, a loud growling sound coming from it every now and then.

Walking over to Arron's side, Lakota looked out onto the street. "Do you sell your photographs? Or is it just a hobby?" While growing up away from her tribe she had learned to study people, their traits, personalities, and pace of life. It all said quite a bit about people. For instance, Arron, he took the time out of his life to take pictures, normally that would indicate a slow paced life. But Lakota wasn't always right.

Arron looked over at Lakota and inadvertantly snapped a picture of her. "Oops, sorry." He lowered the camera. "I've sold a couple to magazines and such, but mostly they're just for me. I like to keep the photos of where I've been and who I've met." He glanced down at his camera. It was professional grade equipment and his pride. "It's also something I enjoy. I like seeing and not just looking."

Augustine paused in his chowing to listen to Arron. His hair started to bristle and a quiet growl rolled around in his throat, but most likely only the girls beside him would hear it. He continued eating, but his eyes were fixed on Arron with a glare.

Molly's eyes shifted to Augustine, then to the photographer he was glaring at. She herself didn't exactly enjoy hearing that a wolf would sell out to the humans, but she would often try to ignore it.

Looking at Lakota, Arron leaned casually against the wall. "There are some really great pictures I took of some northern towns I sold to this wolf run magazine. The pack ran the magazine, and pay me well for my pictures. They're a realy family, and I would have stayed. But I'm looking for my own family..." He trailed off, thinking he had revealed too much already.

Lakota cleared her throat and shook her head. "You ever been in a pack before?" She shook her head as images of the day her pack was torn apart, raced through her mind. "I grew up in the biggest pack in the area." Crossing her arms over her chest she frowned as a far off look came over her. "Watch yourself kid...you get to close and you'll just get disappointed." Shaking her head she pulled a piece of beef jerky out of the small leather pouch that clung to her hip. Biting into she sniffed and looked up as a few teenage kids rounded the corner of the street. "Heads up."

Molly lifted her head, "Hey- are you dolts gonna just stand there or are you going to eat this?" she asked to Lakota and Arron. She wasn't caring for those two yet. They seemed too...human to her.

Arron shook his head at Lakota. "Never had a pack. Been looking for one I want to join." He glanced at Molly as she spoke. "Sorry. I already hunted tonight. But I'll join you." He tucked the camera away and knelt in the shadows, shifting to his wolf form out of sight of everyone else. He trotted over to the others and tore a piece off, carrying it slightly away from the rest.

"A pack run magazine, huh?" Augustine asked as he chewed, a sneer on his lips.

Very slowly Garth was approaching from the side, slipping down carefully into his wolf form in order to take a chunk out of the meat; he was too hungry to care about speaking right now. The wild fuzz covering him spread out in every direction, making him seem much larger than his thin body actually was; with a furtive glance at the others he just slid silently up to the carcass, almost appearing in the middle of the group with nothing telling them such but a very... earthy smell. He leant down at once and tore a huge chunk from the body, taking only a few small chews before gulping it down almost whole.

Arron looked at Augustine and stiffened at the look on the other's face. "Have I offended you in some manner?" He carried the meat back over, setting it carefully in front of the wolf who wasn't speaking, as he seemed much too hungry. Trotting back, slightly away from the carcass, he looked at Augustine again, his tail straight out and his ears tilted slightly back.

After the apearance of the second wolf Mercie took it upon herself to grab a few last gulps of the beef carcus while everyone was occupied. No one was interested in her just yet and instinct dictates you eat what you can when you can. She was sure to stay away from the end Molly had been tearing into. When Aaron approached she quelled the growel that was gathering in her throat and she made sure to do the same when Garth came up. Molly had been the first wolf she'd ever met and that had happened less than five minuets ago. She wasn't about to arouse anyone's attention when she didn't know who was friend or foe yet.

"Naaah," said Augustine, but this was clearly not the case. "I'm just surprised that a wolf with a job would look for a meal out here. Shouldn't you be, I dunno, buying groceries?" There was a venomous tone to his voice. He was obviously making fun of him.

Molly moved over to let Garth in between her and Mercie. She placed a paw on the cow's ribs and tore off a hunk with her jaws. She listened to Augustine next to her, wondering what was going to happen.

Lakota looked over at Molly and frowned. "I don't eat when not hungry, and I never asked to eat. But thanks anyway." Glancing over at Augustine and Arron she frowned. She was going to keep an eye on the two.

Arron huffed out air, his ears pricking forward. "The butcher frowns upon you when you don't have the money to pay for meat. I haven't worked for awhile now. Why? You think all wolves should be freeloading do-nothings? Or is that just you?" Arron's tone had gone to ice.

Augustine picked his head up from his food. He just looked at him for a second or two, dumbfounded. "The butcher... frowns upon you..." he repeated, not believing what he was hearing. "Ok, please tell me I'm not the only one this human wannabe is making nauseous right now."

With a sigh, Arron sat back, looking at Augustine. "Is that your problem, then? That I don't hate humans? I really don't hate anyone until I have a reason to." He stood and trotted back to Lakota, sitting near her feet.

"Mmh, yeah, 'cause genocide sure ain't a reason to hate anyone," said Augustine.

Arron shifted to human, careful to step away from Lakota before he did so. "Not all humans want to kill us. And not all wolves want to kill them. Saying that all humans want us dead...well...it's like my saying that you are an evil beast just because you are a wolf. I'm sorry that our views differ, but I'm not sorry about what I believe."

"Yeah? Tell that to our dead, traitor," Augustine snarled.

Molly cocked her head to Arron, "Don't take it personally man but... are you an idiot or have you lived in a cave all of your life? Humans hate us. Everyone knows that."

Arron cocked his head. "I wasn't exactly raised around people who wanted to kill me. Call me naive, but I don't actually know much about the war or genocide." He glanced at Molly. "You are pretty close. I've lived in the wilderness for quite some time." He gestured at his camera. "I loved it there."

"You guys don't realize, we were all brought up differently. We all have our reasons for hating them, not hating them, or not understanding." Lakota's voice had grown soft as she continued to talk. She wasn't entirely sure she'd ever be able to trust a human again but she wasn't going to go around flaunting it.

"Well he could at least not be rude and have the decency to eat with us." Molly rolled her eyes, licking the blood off of her lips.

Mercie wanted to put forth her two cents but decided against it. She'd been adopted and raised by a loving family and even when they found out about the whole wolf thing kept her as hidden as they could. Then again they where murdered by an angry mob for harboring her. She wasn't going to open her big yap now and reveal to a group of wolves that she hardly knew that she was selectivly human sympathetic. She occupied herself by gnawing the marrow out of a rib bone. The white triangle portion on the bridge of her muzzel had become stained pink.

Arron looked at Molly, a slight shock on his face. "I'm sorry. I didn't know it would be rude to refuse." He inclined his head at her and spoke gently. "My sincerest apologies. May I still join you? Or am I uninvited?"

Mercie's eyes darted back and forth between Aaron and Molly. She had at least helped molly bring it out of the dumpster and this guy was invited? She continued to chew on her bone, reluctant to stop eating in fear of one of the others taking her place. She'd not had a decent meal that hadn't consisted of squirrel or rabbit in weeks and she wasn't going to give it up just yet. She somehow managed not to growel.

"It's not that- you don't just become invited to this meal, take meat and drag it way the hell over there." Molly rolled her eyes.

Arron held up both hands palms outward, backing to the wall in order to lean on it. "I think it might be safer for me to wait until you all are done. As I said before, I already hunted. So if you all finish it, it will be little hardship on me." He didn't bother to mention that his previous meal was little more than a couple of squirrels he had caught earlier, but he didn't want to offend anyone else tonight. Otherwise he would definately find himself limping home again.

Mercie relaxed a bit and realized that she'd almost rendered her entire end of beef (which was mostly spine and some of the lower ribs) to bare bone and cartalidge. She also realized that, for the first time in months she was full. Her belly was visably distended and for the first time while being around the other wolves she spoke "I'm done." She told Aaron and backed away from the meal. She took a pearch ontop of a few empty crates and enjoyed her full belly and not yet being forced to the bottom of the scocial ladder just yet.

Inclining his head to Mercie, Arron shifted and moved to where she had been. He laid low on the ground, his stomach touching it, and gnawed a piece of, eating it quickly. He couldn't hide the sound his stomach made at the intrusion, a sort of growling whine. He glanced back at Mercie. "Thank you," he said quietly. Then he turned to Molly. "I am sorry. I guess I'm not great at socializing." He took another bite, trying his best to stay away from the other teeth.

Mercie didn't offer a responce to his thanks. To tell him that he where welcome would; her wolf reasoned, be an invitation for a male to make himself welcome. She had no intention of being claimed by a wolf much bigger than herself. She was always inclined to rely on her instincts when dealing with people she didn't know.

Lakota looked around and wondered if she should head out. She LOVED the company. It was nice to be able to talk to someone who was going through the same shit as her. But are they all going to be able to get along for much longer? She wasn't so sure.

"So," Augustine said out of the blue. "None of you are part of a pack?"

Molly stepped away from the dead animal and sat on her butt. Lifting her leg, she itched her shoulder. "Really Augustine? I'd like to say that was a little obvious..." Molly glanced out to the various wolves, eating, sitting and just plain standing in place. None of them seemed to know one another. Nor did they act in sync like a family or pack. She finished itching and stood before ruffling her red-brown fur. Molly walked around the carcass and behind the wolves that were still eating. She sniffed at their tails a little, "My name is Molly." she announced to the group.

Arron continued eating, his teeth cruching through bone and flesh indiscriminately, which most likely showed how hungry he was. He paused for a moment to look at Augustine, then at Molly. He then continued to eat.

"Yeah yeah yeah," Augustine said in response to Molly's criticism. After she announced her name, he breathed a little laugh. "Told us already, puppy."

"Puppy?" Molly asked, confused. Out of all the wolves here, he called HER puppy? Heading back at his direction, she explained "I was trying to hint in getting the others names this time. Not everyone introduced themselves. I like addressing people by their names."

"Well then you should have just asked for their names," Augustine said teasingly, with a smile.

Finally Garth pulled back from the carcass, having listened to practically none of the others conversations while he ate. He hadn't eaten in quite some time... He sat back finally onto his backside, a slight twitch in his tail making his happiness more obvious "Garth..." he said simply; though from the ignoring made him think that no one was in fact listening to him.

The air got damp quickly. Rain fell from the sky and hit the pavement where the wolves were. The droplets increased as the storm rolled in.

"Nice to meet you." Molly told Garth, ignoring Augustine. She glared at him quickly as if to say 'Hah!' Her attention went to the sky briefly. Her fur got darker as she became quickly dampened.

Garth's eyes flickered up to the sky as the rain began to fall, a small whimper coming from his lips as every drop hit his fur flattened the fuzz down. The more the water washed out his dirty grey fur the more it began to stick down; eventually Garth's skinny body was emerging, the excess of hair covering the skeletal body giving him a look of a drowned rat.

Mercie tucked her ears close to her head in an atempt to keep them somewhat dry. She'd had a child's plastic poncho stuffed in her pocket since she left home. She prefered being a little cold to being really damp. She changed quickly and pulled it over her head. It was forest green, riddeled with holes and hung barely below the waste. She tucked the hood up and began debating on staying or going to find a dry place for the night.

Lakota quickly shifted back to her wolf form and plopped down on her behind. Glancing around she sniffed the damp air and frowned. "I don't think this is going to let up any time soon." Scratching her ear she contemplated on where she was going to crash for the night. I don't want to have to sleep in the park again. That damned Pitt Bull wont leave me alone.

Arron paused from his eating to look up. His tail wagged slightly as the rain fell. He could tell the others were uncomfortable in the rain. For him this was normal. He looked at the others. "Do you all have a place to stay?"

Lakota smiled slightly and shook her head. "I've lived on the street since I was a pup. This is normal for me." Yawning widely she closed her eyes and laid down and got comfortable.

"I have a place a few blocks from here. "It's kind of small and quite snug, but it has a stove and tons of blankets. Not to mention...dry." Molly spoke up. She really wasn't expecting to have a sleepover so suddenly. "Unless you guys have anything better?"

Arron looked over. "I don't think anyone does..." He didn't mention the fact that he had been sleeping under the stars and no longer felt truly comfortable in enclosed spaces. Some things were better left unsaid.

When the word "Stove" came out of Molly's mouth Mercie hopped off her box and stood by Molly "I'll join you if it's not an imposition. I can help you carry what remains." She meant the bounty that they'd enjoied. If the other's weren't coming she saw no reason to leave it behind and deprive themselves of a well earned meal. She guessed that what was left could feed two wolves of their size at least another day.

"I'll help... I haven't had cooked food in a while" Garth said gently as he settled back and scratched just behind his ear with his back paw. Something blackish and filthy looking tickled out from behind his large ear, down his fur and onto the floor "If you don't mind."

"I smells like a bad storm is brewing. If you don't mind, I'd like to join you as well." Lakota wasn't accustomed to being with other wolves but she figured giving it another try wouldn't hurt.

Reluctant to be indoors, Arron glanced at Lakota as she spoke. It seemed as if everyone was going. And he didn't want to be left out again. "I know it'll be crowded, but do you mind if I tagged along?" His ears flicked as water fell on him. "It is getting a little wet out here, so if we're going maybe we should go soon."

"Alright, that settles it." Molly spoke up, grinning at the wet wolves as they gathered around her. Thunder in the distance rumbled through the wet streets of the city, echoing into the alleyway. She looked down at the dead cow, not wanting any for herself. "I have food at my place but if anyone wants some for later, grab what you can carry." She faced towards the opposite end of the alley. "Let's go." She sprung forwards and ran around the corner.

Arron tore a chunk of meat off the carcus, not being quite finished yet. He then looked at Lakota and gestured his head for her to preceed him out of the alley.

Lakota ripped off a piece as well and darted off in the direction Molly had gone. Glancing over her shoulder she winked at Arron. Damn, I hope I'm not getting myself into another pack, I don't know if my heart can take it. Images of her family flooded her mind causing her to almost keel over in pain.

Garth, being one never to look over an oppertunity while it was still clinging between his teeth, decided to be one of the few to shift back into human form first. He straightened up slightly, looking just as wet and bedraggled as his wolf half; the fuzz that usually covered his head was sticking down like a sheet, revealing that yes, there was a head somewhere under there. He shifted around the wolves carefully, avoiding paws and the like until he got to the head of the carcass. He wrapped his hands around the stump as best he could and began to attempt to drag it with him as they moved towards Molly's place.

Mercie came straggling up behind Garth and snatched up the lower end of the spinal collum and hoisted it onto her shoulder. Two feet and opposable thumbs where better suited for the job and if anyone stopped them Garth and she could take claim of the group for apearances. She wasn't sure why but she was somewhat excited to be around so many of them for the first time. She was still cautious but the wolf in her was slowly warmng up to the idea of being part of a pack. Female or no the thought of a solid pack structure and larger wolves to protect the weaker ones was very reassuring.

Augustine couldn't help shooting Garth a little glare when he said 'cooked meal', but he let it slide, concluding that this group overall seemed a bit too humanized. However, despite this nauseating fact, Augustine craved the company so he went along with them.
